Principal Velvet Underground songwriter Lou Reed was wholly responsible for "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," which by his standards was on the whimsical and tender side of his worldview. Like most of the tracks on Chelsea Girl, it was given an idiosyncratic drumless folk-pop-classical arrangement comparable to few other releases of the time.

The irregular, chipper rhythm was grounded by plucked violin strings, ascending notes until they climaxed with a short, declarative bowed triplet. That backup, with the addition of the kind of flute part that Nico later went on record as disliking when discussing the album's arrangements, was the setting for her lowly intoned yet lilting singing. The mood of "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams" is wistful yet, due in part to the arrangement and singing, colored with a vague sense of uneasy foreboding.

The darker facets of Nico and the Velvets come through in the spoken section, in which she mutters inscrutably about excrement filtering through the brain -- not an image one would associate with pleasant dreams. On this, the tune's folkiest aspects actually come more to the fore, with a gentle vocal from John Cale who usually didn't sing lead on Velvet Underground recordings and no percussion except for Morrison tapping on a sarinda.
