In it was expanded and remastered for the Beyond Description box set on Rhino Records. This version was released individually, April 11, One of the bonus tracks, studio outtake " Peggy-O ", appeared as a bonus on Terrapin Station , in a less complete version.

Ultimately, a version of the song was not released until Dick's Picks Volume 15 , in When it was released, Go to Heaven generally received average to negative responses from critics. Though it was something of a return to the band's roots and had "more-punchy rock sounds", [17] it was still a mainstream attempt and was seen as "mushy" in many reviews. Mydland's vocals resembled Michael McDonald to some critics who compared his California soft rock influence to the direction taken by the Doobie Brothers.

However, the criticism has softened and Go to Heaven is now regarded as an important album in the band's catalog. As noted by a retrospective review in Allmusic , "Time has somewhat mellowed the general disdain that critics and Deadheads alike leveled at Go to Heaven ". DeMatteis 's review in Rolling Stone summarized the album as "more of the same uninspired fluff that's become the Grateful Dead's recorded stock in trade", though he also acclaimed Brent Mydland's contributions.

It still sounds good today and shows that this band had some vast talent away from the stage. Bassist Phil Lesh said "The cover, featuring us in Saturday Night Fever disco suits against a white background, reinforced the impression that we were 'going commercial'. Regardless of the reaction from hardcore Deadheads, Go to Heaven sold fairly well after its release in April , making number twenty-three on the charts and recouping its studio costs.

The critics ravaged it, however; the least offensive description I saw was 'cotton candy'. It plays better now than it did back then. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Grateful Dead. This song always took you on a little ride and I liked when the band quit Sailor in favor of Saint. But in the end, for certain era deadheads, it was way overplayed.

The second electric set started with a cool rhythm devils improv that lasts a couple of minutes, before "Comes A Time" starts up. One of my favorite versions of that song, and it seques perfectly into "Lost Sailor. A fine soundboard exists of the above sequence, worth checking out. One of the highlights of the famous Warfield '80 run.

Meh I agree with both David and Anna: great hooks but overplayed. These both can really be enjoyable songs, especially when paired together with a good transition and the crowd starts jumping on "go for it for sure.

I have to think that a reason for them getting old fast may be that the lyrics have all the Dead themes and motifs, as David says, but they don't go anywhere. And it's kind of sloppy: you lash the person not the mast, and why is the helm "swinging to and fro? I think the two songs shouldn't be linked, because they're different settings. Dust doesn't blow around if you're at sea, and you don't need to know how to read a road-map when you're sailing.

Anyway, a fun pair of songs. Merry Christmas everyone! That 82 Sailor is my Favorite Sailor. Between 79 and 81 it was just about an every other night paring, yikes. Yes there is a price for being Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! It was a very special moment. The jam out of SOC was reeeeaallly cool. The drifting part of the song sort of gets me to thinking of Procol Harum's "A Salty Dog"-a masterpiece of an album. Melville's ruminations in "Moby Dick" while pursuing the unobtainable and perhaps, little understood goal of the White Whale.

The Oddysey and don't forget James Joyce's take on it all. Overplayed from , but still a strong paring Sure Garcia called it "Weather Report Suite" in a blender when interviewed about their new songs in , but I feel like the pair really resonated with certain Deadheads that gave it a chance.

I'm sure for many it got old, considering they played it at pretty much every other show in The cover has a slight crease on the bottom right and some shelf wear. Graded G.

  7. In terms of the quality of material, Go to Heaven includes few gems. Primary among them are Bob Weir 's "Lost Sailor" and "Saint of Circumstance" pairing. While obviously not as thoroughly developed as it would become in concert, the lilting melody and fluctuating tempos are reminiscent of his "Weather Report Suite" from the release Wake 6/
